This subject applies the principle of transformative learning to provide an introductory exploration of education in a clinical health context. In this subject, students will explore the impacts of the clinical setting, learning strategies to overcome the obstacles and optimise the benefits, presented in health care. Students will reflect on the role of the clinical educator and how this differs from other health professionals; identifying the key attributes and responsibilities that the educator requires to be effective in their profession. The principles of adult learning will be applied to real world contexts, emphasising the need for educators to adapt to diverse, individual learning needs of clinicians and students. Finally, students will learn about the clinical educator’s role in the use of technology for clinical education in a post-digital world.

This subject applies the principle of transformative learning to explore the role of assessment and feedback play in clinical education and ultimately, the provision of safe and competent patient care. The different categories and purposes of assessment will be examined, along with the necessary features of a valid and reliable assessment tool. You will learn how to identify and implement an evidence-based assessment tool to assess a clinician and then reflect on this experience to expand your skills as an assessor in the clinical context. The use of constructive alignment between assessment, learning objectives and learning activities will be considered, as well as the role of the clinical educator in identifying and managing underperformance in the health sector.
