Critical Tiriti Analysis and implications for policy evaluation

Activity: Engagement case studiesCommunity

Description

In September 2020 in collaboration with Heather Came of Auckland University of Technology we introduced Critical Tiriti Analysis (CTA) a new form of critical policy analysis. CTA involves reviewing policy documents against the Preamble and the Articles of the Māori text of te Tiriti o Waitangi. Our research included a working example of CTA using New Zealand Government's Primary Health Care Strategy.
The research provides direction to public health practitioners and other policy makers by offering an approach to analysing policy that is simple to use and, inherently, a tool for advancing social justice.

Promotion of the research and critical analysis approach has led to several engagements with policy makers, publication of various articles with wide reaching audience numbers and application of the approach by policy makers in Aotearoa New Zealand.

Engagement activities included addresses to Aotearoa New Zealand Evaluation Network and Ma te Rea: Maori Evaluation Association, a discussion panel and online seminar at the Auckland University of Technology, as well as various articles published online.
