Description
I was invited to present an expert submission to the Future Melbourne Committee Meeting Number 19, Tuesday September 2021.Purpose:
I was requested to provide a presentation to the Future Melbourne Committee of the Melbourne City Council as an expert contributor to a motion by CR Dr Olivia Ball regarding the value of access to books and reading for people deprived of liberty. This motion was before the Committee to gain approval for the City of Melbourne public libraries to provide access to books and reading for the men living in immigration detention within the City of Melbourne. I was asked to draw on my research findings to demonstrate the positive outcomes of reading and access to books for people deprived of liberty, with a particular focus on the benefits for mental health of detainees.
Outcomes:
Following my presentation and after answering questions from the Committee, the Committee voted to pass the motion. The outcome of the passing of the motion was the authorisation for the City of Melbourne Libraries to offer books and other reading materials from their collections to the men living in immigration detentions in hotels in the City of Melbourne.
