Improving University Teaching

Activity: Participating in or organising an eventConference/SymposiumAcademic

Description

I attended the 2021 virtual Improving University Teaching event in July. This international conference brought together university teachers to discuss how to improve university teaching practices. I particularly related to the presentation: Responding to Uncertainty in Higher Education through the Spirit of “Splace” and Flexible Learning by Krystle Ontong. Splace referred to considerations of space and place in learning remotely. This particularly resonated with my research about the impact of space on occupational therapy practice, and the role that context takes in influencing what one has access to in the environment to be able to participate in occupation. The occupation of learning was significantly impacted by students returning home and not necessarily having a 'learning splace' that supported their learning online. I considered how we could create this sense of learning splace online and resolved to do more about encouraging discussion boards and sense of community.
