Activity: Publication peer-review and editorial workEditorial responsibility

Description

Guest editing special issue. I jointly selected the initial paper proposals, negotiating with the publishers a 'bumper' issue as we ended up with a lot more than we expected. We were pleasantly surprised that the theme garnered proposals from across the world, and from both academics and practitioners (though this reflects the two sides of the broader field of knowledge organisation -- it's based on the practical aim of optimising access to documents and resources, as well as the theoretical considerations that touch on 'social epistemology', to use Jesse Shera's term). Most of the accepted proposals materialised, though the many different perspectives on genre (the issue's theme) are reflected in the diversity of approaches and sub-topics that makes the editorial a bit tricky. One thing I noticed in dealing with one of the submissions from a team of practitioners is the importance of academic/research mentorship -- whilst they clearly knew plenty about genre access in practice, and could write well, and make good use of the literature, their methodological knowledge was wanting. I suggested a way forward, by homing in on a component of the data that could be re-written up into a reasonably sound paper, but next time I would also have suggested that they find a research mentor to help them. It's one thing being able to understand and implement or 'translate' research, it's another thing to design, create and write it 'in the original'.
