Description

Myth and Legend in Shadow Theatre

Abstract: This illustrated discussion will show how global practices of shadow theatre are performed in relation to their regional differences. In particular, the well-established conventions of Indonesian and Malaysian wayang kulit will be compared to the shadowy Arabic heritage of khayal al-zill and the Ottoman satirical stories of Karagöz and Hacivat. This will conclude with an introduction to the experimental performances of the Green Beetle Company, which combine shadow theatre and live music to tell stories long forgotten, which have not yet been told.
