Presentation Synopsis
Every day 28 people in Australia with mental illness die prematurely of physical health conditions. For people with severe mental illness this equates to a 20-year gap in life expectancy. Most of these deaths are preventable using existing services and infrastructure. As such, the physical health of people living with mental illness is a priority of the Fifth National Mental Health Plan and a ‘priority’ and ‘start now’ reform of the Productivity Commission Inquiry into mental health. This presentation will briefly outline the extent of the problem and overview some initiatives underway and planned in Australian and overseas. This will lead into a discussion of possible next steps, and further opportunities for reform and service enhancement.
Hope you can join us on Thursday – as per normal practice, the session will be recorded and the link to the recording and the presentation will be available shortly thereafter.
