Description

The project: Consumers and carers as Physical Health Care Navigators in rural Australia: A randomised trial has been funded as part of a Targeted Call for Research by the National Health and Medical Research Council. It is a multi-stage project overseen by a Lived Experience Leadership Team and a Project Implementation Committee. Each stage has different research leads. The collaborative and co-design process requires not only the production of research outputs, but lay summaries of key findings to inform different stages. A major stage initiation process has been undertaken to inform Stage 3, the development of the model of care for the physical health care navigators (PHCN) for the trial, beginning with a briefing session with presentation of key findings by Stage leads (Preliminary Results Briefing – Stages 1 and 2), sharing of key findings summary documents (including this one) from preceding stages and a co-design workshop (PHCN Model of Care Workshop).
• Stage 1 is a rapid review on the use of navigators to improve the physical health of people with mental health conditions.
• A full literature has been drafted, with a manuscript to be prepared with the research team.
• Stage 2a is a survey capturing the perspectives and experiences of consumers, carers and healthcare providers from rural communities regarding improving the physical health of clients with mental health conditions, through the use of a physical health care navigator.
• Stage 2b is a research study on the perspectives of consumers and carers who work in rural communities regarding improving the physical health of clients with mental health conditions, through the use of a physical health care navigator.
• Stage 2c is a research study on the perspectives of service providers and healthcare professionals who work in rural communities regarding improving the physical health of clients with mental health conditions, through the use of a physical health care navigator.
