Description

Recently the School of Social Work and Arts initiated the Older Persons Project (OPP) bringing together social work academics in Work Integrated Learning with those based at Port Macquarie. This led to the establishment of the Social Work Student Unit which undertook research on the wellbeing and support needs of older Australians. The Student Unit also completed community mapping on the wellbeing services for older persons living in the Port Macquarie region. This event presented the student report to industry representatives and interdisciplinary colleagues.
The report of the Student Unit highlighted service gaps for older adults accessing mental health support services and recommended the need for “holistic and integrated health care services” and a co-design research process to develop a multidisciplinary wellbeing clinic (Social Work Student Unit, 2023, p. 58).
The School of Social Work and the Arts is exploring opportunities for the establishment of an interdisciplinary community wellbeing clinic at Port Macquarie Campus which could provide nursing and allied health students (social work, occupational therapy, psychology etc) with work integrated learning opportunities and stronger linkages with industry providers and services to the older persons community.
