An international guest lecture titled "The Art History of the Khayamiya" for the Oriental Museum of Durham University on 16 September 2013. Description: This lecture presented a summary of my research on the history of Egyptian Tentmaker Applique or Khayamiya, including evidence for the origins of this art form, the influence of Khayamiya applique on the paper cut-outs of Henri Matisse, and the integrity of the Khedival Khayamiya as an independent genre. I also discussed the strategies by which Khayamiya can be assessed within an art historical framework, drawing upon contemporary textile analysis, the methodologies of recent Islamic Art scholarship, and applied material cultural research methods.Research Background: In delivering this special guest presentation before an international audience, I examined the situation of Egyptian Tentmaker Applique or Khayamiya as a new field of Islamic Art scholarship. This 90-minute lecture was a summarisation of my research into the history of Khayamiya, and marked the culmination of a lecturing and research tour across the UK and Ireland.
