The Tent Room of Doddington HallA public presentation on Sunday 8 September 2013 at Doddington Hall in Lincolnshire, UK, regarding the context of the spectacular "Tent Room". This unique textile structure is the last intact Mawlid Suradeq of a type that provides architectural evidence for the bridging of decorated tents from the Ottoman Empire and subsequent Egyptian Khayamiya. This formed part of my Khayamiya-driven lecturing and research tour across the UK and Ireland. Description: This presentation took place in Doddington Hall, alternating between an audience of approximately 90 people in the "Long Room" and a smaller audience within the actual "Tent Room" that was the focus of my research. In this context, I explained the situation of Khayamiya from an original context of majestic Ottoman decorated tents, and their subsequent adaptation into vernacular Egyptian design. This lecture was accompanied by a review of the contemporary situation of Egyptian Khayamiya, and a discussion of comparable extant tents related to the Khedival Khayamiya masterpiece displayed in Doddington Hall.
