Towards community data sovereignty for resilience – pilot project – digitising farm diaries and building researcher experience for respectful work with Indigenous knowledges

Activity: Supervision/Examination/MentoringMentor or Internship SupervisionAcademic

Description

Farmers and other environmental stewards in regional Australia generate data such as weather and land observations, stories and diaries. Some of that data is collected by governments and community heritage organisations, often remote from the community and not accessible to all community members.
Using community data sovereignty principles, this project tests community-driven data collection and care, to meet local needs. It digitises two sets of farm data and develops my research skills to engage appropriately with Indigenous knowledges. It tests 1) what insights does the data hold? 2) What process is needed to build in data sovereignty ensuring gathering, keeping and using the data meets community need and goals?
