DescriptionThis review analyses a regional production of Shakespeare's comedy of errors, 'Much Ado About Nothing'. It makes a connection between staging the production at a 19th century colonial mansion with the distant world of Elizabethan theatre, and indeed British canonical works of literature. The ancient landscape of Australia is operates as an incongruous but ironic context through which the loves and frivolities of English society is foregrounded. Being staged outside, Australia's big night sky and vast wilderness beyond the stage evokes other stories and peoples (namely Australia's first people's) excluded from the English canon of literature.
