The Side Project and Embracing Innovations 3

    Press/Media: Press / Media

    Description

These two exhibitions, involving artists from Canberra and across Australia, illustrate recent research and innovation in craft and design. All the artists work with new digital technologies, often in collaboration with others, and apply their designs to such widely diverse fields as medicine and gastronomy, fashion and interior lighting.

And, of course, in a very contemporary mix of science and art is the work of Eleanor Gates. Gates has worked with the CSIRO to create detailed three-dimensional models, in titanium, of insects enlarged beyond their real size. These insects have been used for scientific purposes in the Canberra Centenary Science Art Commission (stellrScopE) as well as educational projects at Questacon. Freed from the constraints of their natural markings and colour, the bugs take on a strange beauty - their functionality only limited by the imagination.
