The Teaching Innovation in Radiography Group (TIRG) is a national, collaborative research group that brings together academics in diagnostic radiography from Australian universities. The group is hosted and led by Shayne Chau, School of Dentistry and Medical Sciences, Faculty of Science and Health, Charles Sturt University.
TIRG focuses on advancing diagnostic radiography education through collaborative, practice-informed teaching and learning research. The group works closely with academics, clinical educators, professional bodies, and industry partners to generate evidence that informs curriculum design, assessment practices, professional capability development, and workforce sustainability across metropolitan, regional, and rural contexts.
Our research
TIRG researchers lead and contribute to research focused on innovation in teaching and learning in diagnostic radiography. The group generates evidence that improves how diagnostic radiography is taught, assessed, and experienced across university and clinical settings.
Current research is organised across three key areas:
Teaching and learning innovation
- Design and evaluation of innovative teaching approaches in diagnostic radiography
- Assessment design, programmatic assessment, and feedback practices
- Simulation, interactive orals, and scenario-based learning
- Reflective practice and development of clinical reasoning
- Use of digital technologies and AI to support learning, communication, and professional identity
Workforce preparation and professional capability
- Educational strategies supporting transition from student to practitioner
- Alignment of teaching and assessment with regulatory and accreditation standards
- Continuing professional development, career planning, and lifelong learning
- Teaching approaches that support rural and regional workforce needs
Scholarship and capacity building
- Multi-institutional education research projects
- Mentoring and capability development for early- and mid-career academics
- Peer-reviewed publications, conference presentations, and grant activity
- National collaboration to strengthen leadership in diagnostic radiography education research
