Dr Abuelo graduated as a veterinarian from the University of Santiago de Compostela (Spain) in 2010, where he also gained a Master by Research (2011) and a PhD (2015). He combined these studies with a residency of the European College of Bovine Health Management (ECBHM). During this training he had also the opportunity of gaining research and clinical experience in different countries and dairy production systems, such as the USA, Germany or the UK, while establishing international collaborations. He is a Diplomate of ECBHM and the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners in the Dairy Practice Specialty. He is also an Associate Member of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine - Large Animal.

He also completed a Master of Science in Veterinary Education (2015) at the Royal Veterinary College (United Kingdom), being recognised as Fellow of the UK Higher Education Academy in 2013. Dr Abuelo moved to Australia in July 2015 to join the Production Animal group of the School of Animal and Veterinary Science at Charles Sturt University as Lecturer in Ruminant Health and Production, being promoted to Senior Lecturer in 2017. As part of his teaching role, Angel contributed to the training of veterinary students in cattle medicine and production throughout the six years of the course. In 2017 he moved to the USA to his current role at Michigan State University and continues to be linked to CSU as an Adjunct Senior Lecturer in Ruminant Health
