Asim Qayyum completed his PhD from the University of Toronto, specialising in the areas of Information and Knowledge Management, and also worked in the university library and taught part-time. Asim's next work assignment was at the School of Information Sciences at the University of Puerto Rico for a few years, before moving to Charles Sturt University in late 2008. Asim also holds an undergraduate degree in Electrical Engineering and an MBA specialising in Management Information Systems. He started his career as an engineer and then worked as a business analyst for many years before moving into the field of Information Studies as a practitioner, and then as an academic.
Asim is currently engaged in projects that use eye-tracking usability techniques to investigate the information needs, uses and practices of students when they undertake online academic learning activities and assessments. He recently completed projects focusing on information needs and uses. The first project explored how the information practices of settlers in regional areas evolve or conform within the new cultural settings that they find themselves in. The second project focused on studying the changing news seeking behaviours of the youth as the news media makes the transition from traditional print formats to online publishing. Among some notable accomplishments, Asim was part of a team that won the Faculty's competitive research award in 2010, and has consistently been awarded institutional grants to carry out his research work, including the current projects.
In 2007, Asim won a research grant from the Online Computer and Library Center (OCLC), and has held many other competitive institutional grants to carry out his research projects. While completing his PhD in 2004, he was awarded the prize for best paper in information sciences by the New England chapter of the American Society for Information Sciences & Technology (ASIS&T). As a doctoral candidate, he was also the recipient of the University of Toronto's open scholarship and Humanities Research Council's travel grants. His doctoral studies were sponsored by the International Council for Canadian Studies after he was awarded the commonwealth scholarship.
