Research Interests

Bernard’s current research builds on the culture centred collaborative creative practice methodology developed during his PhD. Art and design based creative projects such as books and video contribute to the investigation. Critical Participatory Action Research is utilized to build a shared understanding of the direction and outcomes of projects. The research is informed by Indigenous methodologies and principles, such as those espoused by Nation Building theory and practice, where cultural knowledge remains the property of the community and Elders involved. The research process supports the collection and distribution of this knowledge as a source and means of social, political and economic capacity building. Explorations of the centrality of culture to Aboriginal health and wellbeing, and the significance of engaging in ongoing processes of developing cultural responsiveness, are at the forefront of the investigative process. It is an approach that evolves from continuous personal reflection in response to community engagement and service.
