I am a Registered Nurse with experience in the clinical, management, education, research and policy-related domains of nursing. Currently, as the Associate Head of School, I lead strategic projects, leading and collaborating with staff to develop School-level governance and operational structures while establishing and maintaining industry and community connections.
Denise's achievements in teaching in the tertiary learning context are extensive. Denise has convened and taught in both undergraduate and postgraduate courses; devising specific units and subjects of learning focusing on research, research methodology, and evidence-based health care. Also, Denise is developing and setting up the new Bachelor of Nursing curriculum; I have also reviewed existing curricula, and I have chaired review panels for professional accreditation bodies to examine professional learning.
Working to collaborate with interprofessional colleagues Denise developed an all teach, all learn model of education and learning with embedded education strategies linked to audits for accreditation. The model was developed after completing a training needs analysis that identified the key knowledge gaps of staff in the clinical context.
Denise addresses a wide range of subjects. For example, assessing specific clinical decisions for people with long term conditions, delirium, Simulation for Clinical Improvement, Creating a Communication and Patient Safety Culture; Research Methodology. Also, as a member of the Cochrane Collaboration, Denise works to reduce research waste through summarising research for use in the clinical environment.
Denise has developed a particular area of expertise in assessing and responding to systematic review methodology, identifying incautious interpretations, and connecting research results to clinical outcomes. Also, Denise's research interests include creating a safe, respectful environment for family and carers through family centred approaches in, for example, critical care and aged care. This approach comprises patient-centred principles and audits to measure patient/resident, family and carer satisfaction over time.
Denise has been involved in research projects focusing on clinical care, including communication strategies and bedside rounding with interprofessional staff and utilising simulation techniques to improve patient care and outcomes.
Denise has supervised student research projects to completion: focusing on teaching, learning; clinical decision-making and knowledge to support improved health outcomes. Denise encourages creativity, innovation and enjoyment of the research process when supervising student work.
Denise upholds membership to the Australian College of Nursing, Sigma Theta Tau and the International Nursing Association for Clinical Simulation and Learning. Also, as a member of the Cochrane Nursing Care Network, Denise seeks to support nurses to respond flexibly to changes and clinical outcomes.
As an approved academic mentor for the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia Denise supports nurses to address competency issues when instructed to; using the NMBA Code of Ethics, Code of Professional Conduct, Competency Standards and the Decision-Making Framework Denise mentors the nurse to reflect on events to learn from them and change practice.
