Research activity per year
James Farley is an exhibiting artist, curator and lecturer in photography at the School of Communication and Creative Industries in Wagga Wagga.
He studied photography at university in Australia and the United States of America and is a current PhD candidate at Charles Sturt University (CSU), where his research explores post-photography and the practice of ecological stewardship.
James's artistic practice is focused on ecological thinking, landscape aesthetics, and human/non-human entanglements. He is an awarded artist with an extensive exhibition history, participating in solo and group exhibitions in Regional NSW, Australia, London and the USA. A full exhibition profile can be found here.
In 2015, James represented CSU as the Australian finalist in the Sony World Photography Organisation Student Prize in London, UK. He was also a recipient of a Young Regional Artist Scholarship from Arts NSW (CREATE NSW).
As a creative practice-based researcher, James is interested in the expanded field of photographic practice, ecological thinking, and the aesthetics of the Anthropocene.
James is currently engaged in two research projects. The first is his PhD project, Working Within | Post-photography and the Practice of Ecological Stewardship. This project explores cameraless photography and site-specific collaboration as a means of practicing and communicating the values of ecological stewardship.The second is Image Ecologies: The Archive as Renewable Resource.
This is a collaborative project with Jacob Raupach, exploring the viability of counter-urban publishing, contemporary photographic practice and the role of the archive.
