Personal profile

Personal profile

Dr Julia Howitt has expertise in the field of water quality and environmental chemistry. This includes the role of photochemical reactions in the cycling of carbon and iron in aquatic environments and the analysis of gases and organic compounds in aquatic ecosystems. She has written water quality review documents for both Lake Hume and Lake Mulwala and developed the Blackwater modelling program to explore the flooding scenarios in the Barmah-Millewa forests likely to be associated with blackwater events. Julia has also been involved in projects examining pollution of aquatic ecosystems by heavy metals and organic contaminants.

Research Interests

  • Cycling of carbon, nutrients and trace metals in aquatic environments
  • Environmental water use
  • Biogeochemistry, pollution, analytical chemistry including trace analysis, workplace chemical contamination
