Dr Nicola Thomas is an applied economist specialising in agricultural and environmental economics, with expertise spanning climate risk, biodiversity loss, sustainable land use, green finance and decarbonisation. Her research integrates economic and biophysical modelling to address complex natural resource challenges and inform evidence‑based policy across government and industry. 

Nicola has led and contributed to major projects on soil health, water market reform, emissions modelling, water pollutant treatment in riverine environments, regional resilience and sustainable investment, producing insights that support long‑term climate adaptation and land management strategies. Nicola’s research program is characterised by interdisciplinary collaboration, strong stakeholder engagement and a commitment to delivering practical, policy‑relevant outcomes for agricultural systems and rural communities.

Nicola has a research focus on contemporary curriculum design, analytical capability, active learning and real‑world application. Her peer reviewed publications integrates popular culture into teaching practices to support student engagement and critical thinking development.  In her teaching she integrates current economic issues, supporting student success across undergraduate and postgraduate programs. Nicola coordinates and develops the economics stream at Charles Sturt University teaching core undergraduate and postgraduate subjects including:
