Oluyoye Idowu (Michael) is a passionate multidimensional environmental research scientist and sustainability professional. He obtained a PhD in Environmental Remediation from the University of Newcastle (UoN) Australia, in March 2021. Before relocating to Australia in 2017, he worked at the Forestry Research Institute of Nigeria (FRIN) for nine years, rising to the position of a Senior Research Officer. With fields of research expertise spanning forest management, climate change mitigation and plant abiotic stress response, Oluyoye is contributing to the provision of solutions to some of the major environmental challenges confronting the world.
Over the years, he participated in many projects involving artificial and natural forest management, eroded site restoration and polluted media remediation. His remediation studies transcend soils and cover other environmental media such as water and sediment. As a PhD scholar at UoN, he played a pivotal role in a collaborative project with the New South Wales Food Authority (NSW FA), deploying his analytical and research skills in a biomonitoring investigation of polar polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (polar PAHs) in water, sediments, and tissues of an important Australian aquatic species. This formed part of the first detailed study on this class of contaminants, in any part of Australia, resulting in the publication of three peer-reviewed articles.
Presently working as a Research Officer (Horticulture) at the NSW Department of Primary Industries (NSW DPI) and as an Adjunct Research Fellow with Charles Sturt University (CSU), he is investigating the effects of bushfires on fruit tree physiology including fire effect on carbohydrate source-sink dynamics, water relations and nutrition. He also leads a component of a Hort Innovation sponsored project on crop load management in apples, focusing on the effect of CHO manipulation on fruit thinning, and plays an active role in another Hort Innovation project on orchard soil carbon improvement.
The years of working as a research scientist in Nigeria, PhD study at UoN, and his current research commitments in Australia has provided him the opportunity of building a strong network of collaborators in the academia, industry and NGOs at national and international levels. Beyond Australia, he has established strong research connections in Africa, Asia and other continents of the world.
Oluyoye has written different types of articles including peer-reviewed, conference, industry and blog articles, articulating his findings and thoughts effectively for different category of readers.
Oluyoye is a proud Australian distinguished talent alumnus. He hopes to continue to carryout impactful research that will provide useful remediation strategies for agricultural production systems and protect them from pollution, changing climate, and extreme weather events like bushfire and flood.
