Professor Peter Sherlock is the Associate Director of Yindyamarra Nguluway and Executive Director (acting) of the Australian Centre for Christianity and Culture at Charles Sturt University. He is a distinguished historian and theologian whose academic work focuses on the cultural and religious life of Renaissance and Reformation Europe. His research explores how communities remember and forget, especially the use of monuments and tombs in shaping historical consciousness, belonging and community. He is a leading expert in theological education and public engagement with religion in Australia. His most recent books include (with Daniel Nellor) Theology Matters: How Thinking About God Shapes Australia (2024) and The Monuments of Westminster Abbey: Power and Memory in Early Modern Britain (forthcoming 2025).

As Foundation Vice-Chancellor of the University of Divinity from 2012 to 2024, Professor Sherlock created a national network of theological institutions that delivered high quality education meeting contemporary and emerging needs and maintaining the University’s reputation for world-standard research. He drove collaboration across the theology sector, and expanded the University’s engagement with public discourse,  particularly on matters of faith, ethics, and spirituality in Australian society.

Professor Sherlock has demonstrated a lifelong commitment to justice and inclusion, seen in his support for the development of education shaped by and for First Peoples. In 2025 he took up his current role at Charles Sturt University, supporting Distinguished Professor Stan Grant Jr in shaping national conversations about democracy, belonging, truth-telling, and justice that create a world worth living in.
