Personal profile

Personal profile

I am a senior international educator, researcher, and consultant with more than 35 years in these roles. I currently work as a Senior Lecturer and Discipline Lead (PDHPE, creative arts) at CSU in regional Australia. I research and teach dance, creative arts, PE, sport, fundamental movement skills (FMS), health/wellbeing, inclusion, and sociology.

I have written a book on FMS entitled: 'Fundamental Fun: 132 activities to develop fundamental movement skills', which is underpinned by play-based pedagogy. I am fascinated by how the body moves at all ages/stages. My PhD (completed in 2019) was based on body governance in PE in England; I undertook a genealogical approach (Foucault).

I am the principal supervisor and co-supervisor for several PhD students undertaking a range of research topics such as ballet history in Australia, the use of technology in educational settings, and the experiences of international English as Second Language college students. I have an eclectic educational background myself and I feel comfortable working with PhD students in most educational disciplines. Please contact me if you think I might be a suitable supervisor for you; I am always interested in working with new scholarly minds!

Across 2023-2025 I am leading an embodied wellbeing research project in Australia. I am currently chief investigator for a sun safety research project in schools too, in partnership with schools and a dermatology provider.

I thrive in international settings and have built a new life in three different countries. I have dual citizenship (UK, Australia) and I speak fluent French due to my 13-year teaching experience in a bilingual programme in The International School of Geneva. What I find interesting about my international work are the cultural differences that I have learned to navigate with sensitivity and care. I have had the pleasure of working with The University of Cambridge as their lead international physical education consultant since 2010, redesigning curriculums nationally in Mongolia, Kazakhstan, and Egypt. Curriculum projects have involved face-to-face work in-country, online training, and regular desk reviews for many other countries.

My work in Myanmar for Cambridge University Press on the Strengthening Pre-service Teacher Education in Myanmar (STEM) project from 2018-2019 gave me opportunities to align my practice with UNESCO’s humanitarian drivers. This was followed by a 2020 UNICEF-Montrose project in Myanmar, where I was the senior international expert, creating modules and teacher training materials for the 'Playing Sports Together' inclusion project.

Inclusion is not only a part of my initial BEd (Hons) training in special educational needs (with PE and dance), but it is also a way of life for me. As a woman in academia I have to navigate a gendered environment every day, and gender has become a key focus of my research. I love to write about the gendered body in movement contexts.

I have trained for many years in yoga and mindfulness to nurture my own wellbeing and self-awareness to a high level. I hold a ‘research on yoga in education’ 2-year diploma (RYE UK), and a Level 1 certificate in Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR). I became a mental health first aider (MHFA) in 2024, and I regularly train allied health students at CSU in mental health first aid. This yoga-mindfulness-mental health learning enables me to approach life challenges with mental agility.
