Personal profile

Dr Shaoyu Wang is an accomplished researcher, educator, and leader in the fields of biomedical research, anatomy, and medical education. He holds a Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine (Honours) from Shanxi Agricultural University and a PhD from Western Sydney University (WSU). He worked at domestic and international universities, including Emory University School of Medicine (USA).

While working at the Medical Education Unit of WSU, he led curriculum mapping, problem-based learning projects, and made significant contributions to the educational research program. Since joining CSU as a lecturer in 2014 and then promoted to a senior lecturer, Shaoyu has established research programs with a focus on the biology of ageing and rural health.

He teaches anatomy to physiotherapy and dentistry students with innovative approaches and is consistently receiving positive feedback from his students. He also has a proven track record of successful supervision of PhD, Masters, and Honours students.

He provides leadership by acting as the Head of Discipline and Associate Head of School for efficient running of the anatomy and physiology discipline, one of the largest in the CSU. Dr. Wang is also an active contributor to various professional communities including the Australian Association of Gerontology.

Research Interests

Dr Wang's research objective is to develop strategies for improving human and animal health in rural and urban communities. Dr Wang takes two intertwined approaches: 1), understand biology of ageing 2), develop ageing modulation strategies for better health including lifestyle, socioeconomic factors, and pharmaceuticals. These approaches are underpinned by pragmatic research philosophy.

  • Honours: Assessing the cognitive reserve status of cognitively healthy adults in rural and regional communities.

  • PhD (graduated in 2021): Gene expressions of carbohydrates metabolites and the bioactive compounds in aging modulations during pea (Pisum sativum L.) germinating; (An international joint PhD supervision program)
  • PhD (graduated in 2018): Paradoxes of factors influencing maternal health outcomes in rural northern Ghana.
  • Honours First Class (graduated in 2024, Principal supervisor): Efficiency to Inefficiency: EEG Patterns of Healthy Ageing in Response to a Cognitive Challenge
  • Honours First Class (graduated in 2021, Principal supervisor): The effect of rice bran arabinoxylan compound on the gut microbiota of healthy adults - a longitudinal observational study.
  • Honours First Class (graduated in 2019, Principal supervisor): Musculoskeletal symptoms among adult smartphone and tablet device users: a retrospective study.
