Personal profile

Personal profile

Shanna has over 15 years’ experience as a Registered Nurse and Midwife. Completing a Bachelor of Nursing Degree at the University of Western Sydney in 2001. Shanna gained extensive experience working in various health facilities in Australia and in the United Kingdom. Shanna began a career in midwifery in 2005 completing a Graduate Diploma in Midwifery at Charles Sturt University. Shanna then progressed into nursing and midwifery education upon completion of her Master of Midwifery studies in 2008 at the University of Newcastle. She accepted various casual academic and clinical teaching appointments before becoming a permanent member of the universities teaching staff in June 2013. Shanna is excited about her recent appointment with Charles Sturt University as a Lecturer in Nursing and Midwifery in 2019 at the Port Macquarie Campus.

Shanna has actively established and maintained research and teaching collaborations across the Mid North Coast Local Health District supporting the professional development of midwifery staff students and registered midwives. Most notably Shanna and health service colleagues started the Postnatal Maternity Outpatient Clinic (PMOC), a "drop in" postnatal clinic formed due to community need for additional postnatal services, after hospital discharge. The clinic allows for inter-professional collaboration and enables students to lead care in a supervised environment fulfilling their full scope of midwifery practice.

Shanna is an early career researcher and current PhD candidate. Shanna’s research interests surround improving maternal and infant health and the use of immersive technologies in nursing and midwifery education. She is currently investigating antenatal weighing and weight related behaviour in her PhD work. Shanna is a member of the Hunter Medical Research Institute (HMRI) and Priority research centre for health behaviour at the University of Newcastle. Shanna is conducting inter disciplinary research exploring the use of immersive technologies for tertiary and clinical education locally, nationally and internationally. Shanna has experience in both honours and PhD supervision
