Dr. Toufique Ahmed Soomro, a Senior IEEE Member, is a distinguished academic, researcher, and innovator with over 15 years of professional experience in artificial intelligence (AI), biomedical imaging, and smart agriculture. He is currently a Research Data Engineer at the Artificial Intelligence and Cyber Futures (AICF) Institute at Charles Sturt University, Australia. In this role, he leads transformative projects integrating AI and IoT technologies to tackle challenges in drone-based land classification, biomedical imaging, and sustainable agriculture.
Dr. Soomro's academic journey is rooted in excellence. He earned his Ph.D. in AI and Image Processing from Charles Sturt University, Australia, where his research significantly advanced the field of retinal image analysis for diagnosing and detecting retinal diseases. Prior to this, he completed an M.Sc. in Electrical and Electronic Engineering by research at Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS, Malaysia, and a B.E. in Electronic Engineering from Mehran University of Engineering and Technology, Pakistan, where he graduated with distinction.
Throughout his career, Dr. Soomro has held leadership positions that reflect his commitment to academic excellence and innovation. As Chairman of the Electronic Engineering Department and Director of the Office of Research, Innovation, and Commercialization (ORIC) at the University of Larkano, he implemented Outcome-Based Education (OBE) aligned with national accreditation standards, spearheaded curriculum reforms, and secured substantial research funding of over PKR 5 million. He has also served as a Research Professor at the Guangdong University of Technology in China and collaborated with the Ministry of Education in Saudi Arabia on AI-based biomedical imaging projects.
Dr. Soomro is globally recognized for his groundbreaking research. He is ranked second worldwide for his contributions to Retina Image, Retina Blood Vessels, and Hypertension Retinopathy research. With 71 high-impact publications (94% Q1), over 1,798 citations, and an h-index of 21, his work has significantly influenced the fields of medical imaging and AI. He has authored innovative solutions, including a U.S. patent for a breast cancer detection technique, further underscoring his dedication to leveraging AI for healthcare advancements.
In addition to his research, Dr. Soomro serves on the editorial boards of prestigious journals such as Springer’s Journal of Medical Systems and actively reviews for top-tier publications, including IEEE Transactions on Medical Imaging and Expert Systems with Applications. His expertise has also led him to keynote speaking roles at numerous international conferences, where he shares insights into AI’s transformative potential in healthcare and agriculture.
Dr. Soomro’s research interests extend beyond healthcare, encompassing smart farming and sustainable agriculture. He is actively working on AI and IoT-based solutions to enhance agricultural productivity and resilience. His projects, supported by organizations such as the Ignite National Technology Fund and the Pakistan Engineering Council, reflect his commitment to addressing global challenges through innovative technological solutions.
As an educator and mentor, Dr. Soomro has guided numerous Master’s and Ph.D. students, fostering a culture of academic excellence and innovation. His contributions continue to inspire the next generation of researchers while advancing technologies that have a meaningful impact on society.
