Description

Unmasking police accountability

The activities are part of a larger project on police accountability for Aboriginal deaths in police custody. Initial literature reviews have provided insight into some stakeholders’ views but have also demonstrated the absence of police views in this context. Empirical data to address the question How do police officers understand the concept of accountability in the context of their involvement in Aboriginal deaths in custody? is unlikely to be forthcoming from police directly. Police testimony at Coroners’ inquests has been identified as a likely source of such data, however very few transcripts of such testimony are in the public domain and official transcripts are expensive to obtain.
Preliminary investigation has demonstrated that most transcripts from the inquest into the death of Mr Kumanjayi Walker are publicly available. These will be analysed for the purposes of answering the research question above. If this proves fruitful, the expense of obtaining additional transcripts would be justified to expand this aspect of the project. Funding is sought for a Research Assistant to work on initial analysis of the available transcripts, thus providing the basis for preparation of at least two Q1 journal articles and further research funding applications.
