A Real Time Generic Variable Pattern Selection Algorithm for very Low Bit-Rate Video Coding

Abstract

The selection of an optimal regular-shaped pattern set for verylow bit-rate video coding, focusing on moving regions has beenthe objective of much recent research in order to try and improvebit-rate eficieciency. Selecting the optimal pattern set however, isan NP hard problem. This paper presents a Generic VariablePattern Selection (GYPS) algorithm. which introduces a patternselection parameter that is able to control the performance interms of computational complexity as well as bit-rate andpicturequality. While using a sub-optimal variable pattern set, GYPSoblains a coding perJormance comparable to near-optimalalgorithms, such as the k-change neighbourhood solution, whilebeing much less computationally intensive, so that it is able toprocess all types of video sequences in real-time, with minimalpre-processing overheads
