Abstract

Australia and New Zealand are fortunate to have a number of excellent national organisations representing the interests of paramedics from a range of perspectives. On one hand, there are groups who represent the labour interests of paramedics within the various countries, states and territories, whereas there are special interest groups serving the needs of paramedic academics, remote providers, community paramedics and other specialties. Additionally, a group exists to represent the statutory providers of ambulance services while peak bodies focus on representing the paramedic professional interests. The purposes for this article are to briefly describe the role of each organisation, identify the value they add to paramedic practice in Australasia, and also describe the activities of each organisation supporting the advancement of paramedic registration. It is intended that this summary will encourage the reader to become more involved in one or more of these organisations in order to make a difference to our profession.
