Abstract

Fueled by the move to online assessment, allegations of academic dishonesty are increasing. In my role as an academic integrity officer, I have gained insight into some of the more common methods of detection of breaches. Anecdotally, it does seem that as fast as detection methods are uncovered, a new method of evading detection is available.

In this Quick Talk, I will highlight some of the more common red flags to look out for as well as some of the less obvious. Detection is only a small part of the process. Dawson (2020) coined the phrase “the e-cheating life cycle” and as academics, we need to be aware of this cycle in combination with the move to online learning. Technology is both our friend and foe and awareness is essential.
