Abstract
This chapter focuses on aspects of asylum administration in late nineteenth-century Victoria by examine how Edward paley, the Inspector of Asylums 1863-83, dealt with the Ararat Asylum. The regional asylums at Ararat and Beecworth wree opened in 1867 and complemented the asylum at Yarra Bend in metropolitan Melbourne.
