Abstract
For the past two years, I have been fortunate to be a member of the International Literacy Association's (ILA) Young Adult Book Award Committee which honours new authors of young adult (YA) literature. During this time, my five committee mates and I have reviewed 218 YA books from nonfiction titles like the autobiographical Don't Look Back: A Memoir of War, Survival and My Journey from Sudan to America (2022) written by Achut Deng about her life in collaboration with Keely Hutton, to verse novels like Dark Testament: Blackout Poems (2023) developed by Crystal Simone Smith to honour Black lives taken violently and unjustly in the USA, to fictional stories like What Walks These Halls (Clarkin, 2023), a contemporary ghost story set in Ireland. This article will delve into the ILA, the process we go through as a committee and explore some of the themes evident in titles from 2023 to 2024.
