Abstract

Stocking is used worldwide as a management tool to maintain and enhance recreational fisheries or help to conserve species following a decline. Various species of trout and salmon have been stocked into Australian systems to establish recreational fisheries. These activities commenced in the mid-1800s and over 63,700,000 trout have been stocked into NSW over this time. There has been relatively little monitoring of stocking success over that period, so the relative efficiency of these stocking practices is poorly understood.
