Abstract
The strengths and challenging aspects of our society and their impacts require serious, multidimensional, respectful analysis. Yet in-depth research is not always easy to achieve. How can researchers investigate the complexities of society in a comprehensive, multidisciplinary way? There is a need for focussed research specialising in one field, but is it enough to say, ‘it is complicated’ and ‘beyond the scope of this project’, and not examine the influence that specialised research can have beyond the focal area? And what about, as Emile Durkheim warns, when people read scholarly research related to their circumstances but are not able to perceive how the research relates to their life and its complexities?
