Abstract
Yaegl Country Aboriginal people of northern New South Wales, Australia, regard Alphitonia excelesa (Fenzl) Reissek ex Benth. as one of their most import medicinal plants. Fresh leaves of the plant are used by the Yaegl and other Aboriginal peoples as an antiseptic handwash, for sores and skin conditions, aches and pains, sore eyes and toothache. Leaves of this plant, collected from Bandjalung Country, were ground and extracted sequentially with n-hexane, dichloromethane, ethyl acetate, methanol and water. A separate portion of ground leaves was soaked in water to mimic its customary use.
