Abstract
Objectives: To investigate the lived experience of adults who experienced distress during clinical MRI.
Methods: Hermeneutic phenomenology methodology where lived experience data was collected through two stage semi-structured interviews. The population were adults from regional and rural New South Wales. Human research ethics was granted
Findings: Eight participants were interviewed, providing deep and holistic insight into their lived experience. This oral presentation explores the nuanced, intersubjective and dynamic nature of distress in MRI. This can be imagined as a continuum on an axis between two diametrically opposed poles of no distress and profound distress, where the individual continually moves back and forth along the axis over time
Conclusion: Distress in MRI is existential in nature with participants experiencing anxiety, fear and terror. Distress in MRI can be one of medical trauma with profound longer lasting impact. Practitioners need to be aware of the diverse nature of distress within this environment to be able to provide effective individualised person-centred care.
