Abstract
Sport tourism is a significant segment of the total tourism sector and holds great opportunities for regional areas. Taking an exploratory approach this paper examines the potential value to regional tourism of the equestrian competitor as a viable sports tourism market. The paper firstly discusses sports tourists in general and then defines the equestrian competitor as a sports tourist by placing the equestrian competitor within Gammon and Robinson's (2003) 'Sport and Tourism Model', whereby they qualify as a 'Hard Sports Tourist'. The paper then explores the possibility of the equestrian competitor being a legitimate and viable sports tourism market segment specifically for regional areas. Finally, the paper demonstrates the potential value of the equestrian competitor as a viable sports tourism segment by way of a regional case study. The case study demonstrates that the equestrian competitor as a sport tourism market can provide significant opportunities for regional areas seeking to diversify and or extend present tourist markets.
