Abstract

What is the current state of films being produced by leading Australian animators (2017—2018)? Can the non-theatrical release of national films during this time achieve international recognition? The Australian Showcase was a unique program treated as an external production and specially prepared for Australian International Animation Festival 2018. One of AIAF’s most important and popular programs, there aren’t many opportunities to see Australian animation on the big screen and each year the festival probably shows more than any other event in the world. This is an opportunity to see what Australian animators are doing, how they’re doing it and how the art form is traveling. After the screening there is a chance to meet many of the animators, hear them talk about their films and ask them questions about their work. The program premiered on Saturday 19th May at the Forum 6 Cinema, Wagga Wagga, and featured personal introductions from Australian filmmakers with support from additional crew. The behind the scenes work was equivalent to a full-length production and required independent logistics in an effort to showcase exemplary national content in the best possible light. The significance of this work is evident by reference within the animation industry and international community. The program is considered by the AACTA Awards for identifying Australian talent and can be an invaluable lesson for what (and what not) to do for aspiring Australian filmmakers in 2018—2019.
