    Abstract

This is a peer-reviewed 400 word entry, resulting from original research into the Australian Town and Country Journal for the reference work, A Companion to the Australian Media (Griffen-Foley, B., 2014). The Companion features more than 500 entries authored by more than 300 industry and scholarly experts on the past and present Australian media. It is an authoritative reference work for scholars, media practitioners and policy makers. The Australian Town and Country Journal entry represents the outcome of original research using primary and secondary sources into the history of the journal, which played an important role in Australian literary and journalism history. I was invited to author the piece, based on my knowledge and experience as a journalism historian. As stated in the preliminary pages of the published Companion each entry was peer reviewed.
