Abstract

A discussion of the suitability, meaning, importance and function of the use of "Beloved Disciple" in the Gospel of John and the implications of its use for an understanding of the authorship and interpretation of this Gospel, especially in the light of chapter 21, which appears to be an addition to an already completed work. The article has implications for the study of the Gospel and its relevance to the task of illuminating the historical Jesus and the beginning of Christianity.
