Change one thing in a second year biochemistry subject (BCM210)

Abstract

As part of the 2023 redevelopment process for Foundations and Techniques in Biochemistry (BCM210), a traditional mid-session exam was replaced with a research poster assessment task that was individualised to provide relevancy to the course each student was studying at Charles Sturt University. Each student received a unique research topic that covered a specific enzyme in a known metabolic pathway in an organism relevant to their enrolled course. Embedding an open resource poster assessment task was one way to remove a stressful online invigilated exam environment where issues of authenticity were raised from time to time due to collusion, plagiarism &/or use of artificial intelligence (ChatGPT). The research poster assessment task improved student engagement with the material presented within the subject and with the biochemistry lecturers. HD and DI percentages were higher in 2023 than the last couple of years, which was partially attributed to assessment redesign. Many students commented on the end of session surveys that they liked the assigned assessments for this subject including the research poster assessment task and the real-world relevancy to their chosen profession.
