Abstract

Building a child friendly' city was a collaborative project between staff from Wodonga Council and Charles Sturt University, including Professor Sue Dockett, Emma Kearney , and Professor Bob Perry. In 2009,Wodonga Council sought to identify the perceptions of children and young people living in the Wodonga community about their city, as well as identify possible ways Wodonga Council might actively improve the city to make it more child and youth friendly. The Building a child friendly city project was funded through a CSU Competitive Research Grant. This collaborative project documented children and young people's experiences, expectations, perspectives of, and aspirations for, their local community. The consultative approach was aligned w ith the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (United Nations, 1989), and founded on awareness that children are competent in providingexpertise on matter s that are important to them. The projectwas undertaken between May and July,2009.
