Abstract

Arts-based methods can inform children’s functional speech and language assessments and support client-centered care. Children Draw Talking protocols have been used for over a decade to enable speech-language pathologists and educators to engage children as experts to communicate about their lives. This session provides an international lens (USA, Australia, Jamaica, Canada, Fiji) describing the ecological utility of children’s drawings to understand diverse children’s perspectives about communication and to learn about protocols, benefits, cautions, and limitations. By using arts-based methods, we can actively engage children in matters that concern them, while also adhering to Articles 12 and 13 of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child.
