Abstract
Fresh bread. One of the most important things that I learned as a L-plated preacher came from the then St Mark's systematic theology lecturer and exemplary preacher, Graeme Garrett. Preaching-breaking open the Word for the people of God-is always a one-off. Your filing cabinet, or hard drive now, might be overflowing with sermons that you've preached. They are stale bread. And who deserves this? I have made only the very occasional exception to this rule-for hopefully defensible reasons. On Easter 2, exhausted from the particular, if wonderful, demands of Holy Week, I nearly always read John Chrysostom's Easter sermon-or more accurately an extract from one of the most treasured of the "golden mouthed" Chrysostom's lengthy homilies. It's a wonderful piece that never fails, for me and its hearers.
