    Abstract

In the past decade civil society in Asia has attracted considerable attention. This volume explores new perspectives on the nature of civil society in Asia. How, if at all, does civil society in Asian differ from that in Europe? Does civil society in Asia have any defining characteristics? Is there one form of Asian civil society or are there many? Does civil society have to take a predictable form, or is it a functional concept that can be concretized in many different ways? In sum, is it important to approach civil society in Asia with an awareness of the very different hsitories and structures of particular societies, but also with a sense of the challenges they face both internal and external.
