Abstract

The Australian Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety 2021, supported by recent research, highlights significant scarcity, service gaps, and systemic concerns in both specialist and integrated health care services available to older persons in rural communities.

This paper presents an emerging initiative to provide improved ageing and aged care experiences and enhance clinical research capacity through the co-design and establishment of a university-based interdisciplinary community wellbeing clinic for older persons in Port Macquarie, Australia. Interprofessional practice work-integrated learning placements also provide opportunity for authentic learning experiences while contributing to the common good of the local community.

Utilising a practice research framework, participatory qualitative approach and co-design methodology, phase one of project engages stakeholders, including older persons and service users, industry professionals, community members, First Nations representatives, and students. This phase focuses on developing a sustainable clinic model and gathering data to support future scalability and resource allocation. Phase Two focuses on clinic implementation and evaluation, exploring feasibility, sustainability, and potential funding sources.

Engaging stakeholders in focus groups and individual interviews informs the development of a clinic model tailored to the Port Macquarie region's needs, laying the groundwork for sustainable, interdisciplinary care delivery that meets the needs of the Port Macquarie region.

A university-based interdisciplinary community wellbeing clinic addresses critical needs in ageing and aged care and contributes to improved health and medical service delivery in regional and rural areas. The interdisciplinary approach fosters community engagement and enhances clinical research capacity, aligning with national recommendations for reform in aged care education and service delivery.
