N2 - This issue of Marine and Freshwater Research celebrates 50 years of the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands, which was signed in 1971. It contains papers that describe the development of the Convention and its implementation, including the listing of wetlands of international importance and maintenance of their ecological character. The latter is a fundamental issue for wetland management as illustrated in papers that address a range of management issues, including the impact of climate change, and approaches for building awareness about their values, and concludes with a forward view for potentially reframing human-wetland relationships.
