Abstract
While competitive inter-firm processes have been playing a significant role in achieving business advantages, there is a dearth of research examining their antecedents and outcomes. In this research, we examine how competitive process capabilities which include process alignment and process flexibility impact firm performance. Drawing upon the resource-based view theory and the notion of higher-order capabilities, we theorize how top management and three types of IT capability, as lower-order capabilities, enable higher-order capabilities such as process alignment and process flexibility. Our research hypotheses are tested using data from 310 firms in Australia. Results show that both process alignment and process flexibility have significant positive effects on firm performance. In addition, top management participation and external IT linkages directly affect both process alignment and process flexibility. While IT infrastructure and IT business partnerships positively affect process alignment, they are not significantly related to process flexibility. Contributions and implications of this study are discussed.
